Sediul Institutului de Matematică „Simion Stoilow” al Academiei Române, de pe Calea Griviței nr. 21, este una dintre puținele clădiri din perioada comunistă clasate monument istoric în București (cod LMI B-II-m-B-18843).

Clasarea nu a protejat-o de vandalism și nici de neîntreținere. Basorelieful din beton aparent al lui Ion Stendl, vizibil direct din stradă, este acoperit pe aproape toată lungimea de un graffiti de mari dimensiuni. Pe calcanul turnului și pe copertina amfiteatrului sunt inscripții cu spray.

Pe fațada principală, betonul elementelor verticale se desprinde în mai multe locuri, iar armătura a rămas expusă. Copertina de deasupra parterului are betonul căzut și urme de infiltrații, iar pe fațada laterală lipsesc porțiuni din placajul ceramic. Gardul de împrejmuire este deformat și nu mai protejează basorelieful.

The headquarters of the “Simion Stoilow” Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy, at 21 Calea Griviței, is one of the few buildings of the communist period listed as a historic monument in Bucharest (LMI code B-II-m-B-18843).

Listing has protected it neither from vandalism nor from neglect. Ion Stendl’s exposed-concrete relief, visible straight from the street, is covered along almost its entire length by a large graffiti piece. Spray-painted tags cover the blind wall of the tower and the canopy of the amphitheatre.

On the main façade, the concrete of the vertical members is spalling in several places and the reinforcement is exposed. The canopy above the ground floor has lost concrete and shows signs of water infiltration, and parts of the ceramic cladding are missing on the side façade. The perimeter fence is bent and no longer protects the relief.

O clădire modernistă de tip lamă, cu volumetrie simplă, acoperiș terasă și fațade ritmate de elemente verticale repetitive. La parter, stâlpii se descarcă câte doi pe elemente structurale în formă de V, vizibile din stradă.

Clădirea transpune matematica în artă monumentală. Basorelieful din beton aparent de pe zidul amfiteatrului și mozaicul de pe holul de acces sunt lucrări ale lui Ion Stendl. Mozaicul de la ultimul etaj, care îl evocă pe Miron Nicolescu, este realizat de Gheorghe Iacob. Simbolurile matematice se recunosc ușor chiar și de pe trotuar.

Basorelieful este cel mai expus: se află la nivelul trotuarului, iar gardul din fața lui nu mai oprește pe nimeni. Vopseaua de pe betonul aparent pătrunde în pori și devine tot mai greu de îndepărtat fără a afecta suprafața originală.

Degradările nu sunt ireversibile. Curățarea graffiti-ului cu metode potrivite pentru betonul aparent, tratarea armăturii expuse, repararea copertinei și înlocuirea gardului sunt lucrări de întreținere curentă. Fiecare an de amânare le face mai scumpe și mai riscante pentru opera originală.

The building translates mathematics into monumental art. The exposed-concrete relief on the amphitheatre wall and the mosaic in the entrance hall are by Ion Stendl. The top-floor mosaic, which evokes Miron Nicolescu, is by Gheorghe Iacob. The mathematical symbols are easy to read even from the pavement.

The relief is the most exposed: it sits at pavement level, and the fence in front of it no longer stops anyone. Paint on exposed concrete soaks into the pores and becomes ever harder to remove without damaging the original surface.

The damage is not irreversible. Removing the graffiti with methods suited to exposed concrete, treating the exposed reinforcement, repairing the canopy and replacing the fence are routine maintenance works. Every year of delay makes them more expensive and riskier for the original work.

Dacă ai fotografii vechi ale clădirii, ale basoreliefului sau ale mozaicurilor, planuri sau amintiri din institut, trimite-ni-le. Ne interesează în mod special imaginile din anii 1968-1990, care arată starea originală a lucrărilor de artă.
